P.E.A.C.E. 100 gearing up for 18th run to help D.A.R.E.

18th annual P.E.A.C.E. 100 raises $21,000 for D.A.R.E.
By Melissa Mangelsen
Journal Staff

The 18th annual Police Elks Assisted Community Education (P.E.A.C.E.) 100 was held on Feb. 8 and 9, and despite the cold weather, was a success.
Twenty-two riders braved the cold to raise money for the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program and enjoy some trailed snowmobiling in the area.
The P.E.A.C.E. 100 is put on annually by the Nipawin Elks Lodge in conjunction with the Royal Purple to help raise money towards the D.A.R.E. program.
Many dignitaries from the Elks and the Royal Purple were on hand to help celebrate this achievement and to get to know people in the area.
Al Edwards of White Rock, B.C., Grand Exalted Ruler/National President of the Elks of Canada was in Nipawin for his first time for the event. He was pleased to see the support given to the Elks from community members in Nipawin, he was also happy to see service clubs working together to help make the community a better place.

Debbie Waldon, Supreme Honoured Royal Lady was also at the banquet and awards to extend her congratulations to the riders for braving the cold.
"I'm glad to see the help going to a program that is so needed in our province," said Waldon.
René Shank, Drug and Organized Crime Awareness, Service "F" Division (Saskatchewan), was also there to extend his gratitude to the event and raising money for D.A.R.E.
Over 30 officers were trained in the D.A.R.E. program this year and Saskatchewan currently has 149 active members teaching D.A.R.E.
The D.A.R.E. program is offered in every school division in Saskatchewan and last year alone they reached out to 3,340 kids through 163 D.A.R.E. classes taught.
Although some dispute the D.A.R.E. program and if it has any impact on children, Shank said he's not going to argue with the naysayers.
"No one wins with arguing about it, it's just mudslinging," said Shank.
The people involved in D.A.R.E. feels it makes a difference, and Shank said if it makes a difference to just one child it's worth it.
"The D.A.R.E. program isn't credited with solving all problems, but it is a piece of the puzzle," said Shank.
At this year's P.E.A.C.E. 100 two men from Saskatoon saw a TV ad for the P.E.A.C.E. and liked what they saw and thought it was a good cause, so they headed to Nipawin the morning of the event to participate.
This year the P.E.A.C.E. 100 raised $6,041 in donations, $25,768 in ticket sales and will be donating between $20,000 and $21,000 to the D.A.R.E. program, reaching their goal that was set before the event.
This year's riders prizes went to Gary Cory, John Barks of Melfort, Travis McKetsy of Saskatoon and Const. Derek Pineo.
The first place of the draw was a Yamaha 350 Bruin 4x4 quad, which went to Ray Kalk of Pontrilas.

followup article courtesy of: Nipawin Journal

Province Proclaims Snowmobile Safety Week

Safe and sober on the snow
Snowmobilers were urged to have fun, but reminded to do it safely during Snowmobile Safety Week in Saskatchewan.

Carl Carter
Monday January 21, 2008

Snowmobilers were urged to have fun, but reminded to do it safely during Snowmobile Safety Week in Saskatchewan.
Between 2002 to 2006 there were 326 crashes involving snowmobiles, which caused 231 injuries and 21 deaths. The Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association is one of the sponsors of the safety week – Jan. 13 to 19 – and president Barry Bradshaw advises taking safety courses to help get those numbers down.
“Definitely a little bit more care needs to be taken by drivers. Conditions change. Drinking and riding is still a problem in a lot of places, and speed is probably the other factor,” said Bradshaw, who advises riders to take the safety courses offered through the Saskatchewan Safety Council.
Gayle Speidel, Lloydminster’s MADD coordinator, said the safest thing is not to drink because of all the deaths associated with snowmobiles. Out of 21 deaths 13 were alcohol related and totally preventable according to Speidel, who also wonders how any driver could not take the safety courses.

“It’s awareness, and it’s like getting a license to drive a motorbike. It’s safety,” said Speidel. “It’s just education, and you can’t go wrong with education.”
Sgt. Brad Zerr, detachment commander for the Lloydminster rural RCMP said local riders have been fortunate because there haven’t been any serious incidents in the area, but warns riders to be cautious and remember that they are still liable for charges of impaired driving.
“They don’t think it’s necessary to keep those rules and laws in mind, and it’s kind of a free for all for snowmobiles, and they need to keep those rules in mind for everyone’s safety,” said Zerr. “There’s a mindset involved with snowmobiling. For snowmobilers anything goes.”
The laws concerning snowmobiles are the same as driving a car, so a driver’s blood alcohol level needs to be below .08 per cent. Mothers Against Drunk Driving advocates a .00 per cent BAC level, and MADD continues to pressure the federal government to lower the criminal code BAC level to .05 per cent.
“When you’re impaired you can’t react as quickly in a dangerous situation, or you make bad decisions. It can really be a very dangerous situation when you mix snowmobiles and alcohol,” said Wanda Kristensen, director of programs for MADD Canada, who is astounded by the number of alcohol-related deaths surrounding snowmobiling.
“Everybody thinks that it will never happen to them. It’s always someone else, but that’s not true. It can happen to anyone.”

article courtesy of: *Link*

Valcourt, Québec, Canada, September 14, 2007 – Today marked the beginning of a new era for BRP as its first on-road vehicle, the 2008 Can-Am™ Spyder™ roadster, rolled off the assembly line in Valcourt, Québec.

A three-wheel vehicle (two in the front, one in the rear), the Spyder roadster offers the performance of a traditional motorcycle with much of the peace-of-mind of a convertible sports car. It is powered by a Rotax® 990 V-Twin engine, produced by BRP Rotax, the company's Austrian division and a world leader in engine development.

"This is a very important day in the history of BRP," said José Boisjoli, president and CEO, BRP. “Our employees around the world have a lot to be proud of as we bring to the market a product that is a true paradigm shift, a completely new and unique vehicle, one that will redefine the roadster category. The Can-Am Spyder roadster is yet another testimony of BRP's passion for innovation and for the powersports industry," he added.

The February 2007 launch was followed by a targeted marketing campaign in both North America and Europe, which gave potential clients the opportunity to ride the new roadster.

"Since its official unveiling, the Spyder roadster has been a hot topic among powersports enthusiasts, open-road newcomers and media alike the world over. To date, more than 20,000 consumers have tried the Can-Am Spyder roadster in 11 American states, four Canadian provinces and eight European countries," concluded Boisjoli.

The first units will be delivered to selected dealerships across North America in October while dealers in International markets will receive theirs at the beginning of 2008.

In 2008, BRP will pursue its go-to-market strategy and deploy the Can-Am Spyder roadster to approximately 20 additional American states, a few other Canadian provinces and 15 countries in Europe, South America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. The roadster's worldwide deployment should be completed within the next two to three years.

The first Spyder roadster to roll off the Valcourt assembly line will be delivered to Jay Leno, a well-known collector and restorer of era-defining cars and motorcycles, columnist in Popular Mechanics Magazine, and host of the iconic U.S. television programme The Tonight Show.

Bombardier Recreational Products Inc.
